First Time Car Buyer? Here are the Questions to Ask!

If you are a First Time Car Buyer, be prepared to ask some questions!
Before you go, consider this. Why do you need a car? This question may seem silly but you need to be realistic and know the reason behind why you are buying a car to begin with. Will this vehicle transport you to and from work? Is it just a cruise on the weekends kind of car? Do you need to travel long distances? Are you planning for a family? Whatever your reason for buying a car, know it. Knowing what you need from a vehicle will help you determine what is most important for you to have in a vehicle.

You need to have a budget. A budget that is realistic and comfortable because there are many “extra” expenses involved in being a car owner. Some of which, most first time car shoppers don’t consider prior to signing that agreement. You need to figure what payments you can afford comfortably. Calculate your monthly income and then deduct all of your monthly payments: rent or mortgage, electric bill, cable, water, food and any credit card or loan payments you pay regularly. Next, calculate any lifestyle extras, such as monthly movies, eating out or childcare. What remains will give you an idea of what you can afford to spend on a monthly car payment. This may also give you an idea of where you may want to cut back so you can afford the vehicle of your choice. Remember there are other expenses that coincide with car ownership. Include in your budget the cost of insurance, registration fees, and gas. Calculate for routine maintenance and repairs as well. Being as financially prepared as possible will only help you. Consider buying a pre-owned vehicle to save on your monthly payments, get a lower interest rate, and prevent depreciation loss.
Now you can start shopping.
At the car dealership request a CARFAX report to see the full history of the vehicle. Check the tires and ask how deep the tread is. You don’t want the expense of replacing tires on a car you’ve just purchased! According to Drivetime.com, if the tread is below 3/32 of an inch, you will need to replace them. Continue to check everything. Door locks, windows, stereo, lights and wipers. Don’t forget to take the car for a test drive and check that the brakes are working properly.
Inquire about financing options and lending requirements. Ask what the interest rate is and lock in those monthly payments but before you do, read the fine print. Ask what warranty is available to determine whether purchasing an extended warranty will benefit you.
